Story #72
Homes
of Merritt (Soil and Groundwater Impact, UST Program):
Briefly,
EI was retained by the client to take over an assessment/remediation
project connected with a release of petroleum from a leaking underground
storage tank (LUST). Prior consultants had determined the secondary
source soils were inaccessible and that there was free phase petroleum
present on the groundwater. EI reassessed the available data, and
based on that review implemented a two phased remedial approach.
The first phase removed the secondary source soils and free-phase
petroleum through excavation. Prior site studies had incorrectly
identified contaminants in "rock", and were therefore
not amenable to excavation. Our assessments showed these materials
to be partially weather rock, and by utilizing a larger excavator,
were removed. These activities cleared the way for the installation
of an air sparge/soil vapor extraction system (AS/SVE). Approximately
six months after system start-up, dissolved phase hydrocarbon concentrations
have been reduced by 98 to 99%.
