| Success Story #77
Three Mountaineers (Soil and Groundwater Impact, RCRA):
EI
has been working with this client since 1992. The project was initiated
due to the release of wood finishing solvents into the subsurface.
Initial remedial estimates for source removal were elevated due
to the nature of the solvent's being a listed hazardous waste. EI
implanted a limited excavation and on-site treatment utilizing low
temperature thermal desorbtion. This treatment reduced the volume
of hazardous waste removed, rendered the soil a non-hazardous waste
and saved the client 75% of the project remedial costs for the project.
The residual soil and groundwater impacts were treated utilizing
air sparge/soil vapor extraction (AS/SVE). Contaminant concentrations
in groundwater have been reduced from in excess of 500,000 parts
per billion total VOCs, to less than 20 ppb VOCs in the source well.
Contaminant concentrations have been reduced to an extent that the
system's operation is to be discontinued, with the remaining low
contaminant load to be handled utilizing monitored natural attenuation
(MNA).
