| Success Story #78
Environmental Contaminant Remediation:
A Southeast-based lumber company recently began the divestiture of real estate that no longer served the company’s wood products facilities. Operations at the facilities included wood treatment with heavy metals and pesticides. EI provided consulting services to the lumber company to ensure that the decommissioning of the facilities would result in the removal of potential environmental liabilities. Preliminary assessment findings showed that soil and groundwater quality at most of the sites was impacted by constituents used at the facility to treat wood such as, chromated copper arsenate and pentachlorophenol.
Together with EI’s team of professionals, the lumber company is successfully navigating forward through the regulatory program under the direction of DENR. To date, EI has performed a Comprehensive Site Assessment, which has characterized the site specific subsurface lithology and hydrogeology and delineated the impact to the environment. EI worked with the lumber company to develop and submit a Remedial Action Plan that would remove the constituents of concern from the site; that Plan has now been accepted by DENR. Within the coming months, the lumber company and EI plans to implement the Remedial Action Plan which is expected to have a significant reduction in contaminants at the site and prevent the degradation of water quality to a major waterway.
