The EI Group's Michael Walker Receives Stormwater BMP Certification

January 18, 2012

Mike Walker

Research Triangle Park, NC - Michael Walker, P.E., CEM, LEED-AP has recently obtained certification through North Carolina State University (NCSU) as a Stormwater BMP (Best Management Practices) Inspection and Maintenance Professional.  The NCSU program is recognized as the standard for qualifying Stormwater BMP professionals even beyond the borders of North Carolina.

Communities must manage rainfall that runs off roads, streets and parking lots. This runoff, known as stormwater, must be managed through a treatment device (BMP) such as a wet retention pond, bioretention area, swale, stormwater wetland, permeable pavement, rainwater harvesting system, proprietary device or level spreader.

At a minimum, BMPs must be inspected annually to ensure they are performing as intended. Inspection and maintenance of BMPs includes hydrologic and water quality functions, landscape functions and consideration of impacts on human health and safety.  BMPs are not managed as standard landscape features, as they are water quality treatment devices, and specialized training is needed to perform inspection and maintenance activities, such as that obtained through NCSU.

Mr. Walker, Vice President of Energy and Environmental Services with EI, has been providing stormwater compliance services to clients since the rules were first promulgated by the  Environmental Protection Agency in 1990.  He has written Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP), conducted the required site training and inspections as well as spoken at numerous environmental conferences over the years.
